Pastor Barry C. Spencer is a native of Indianola, Mississippi where he attended and graduated from Gentry High School. He lettered in Football, baseball and track and field, receiving a scholarship to play football at Lane University in Jackson, Tennessee. He is happily married to his lovely wife of 20 years Stephanie Spencer and they are blessed with two children, Dasmin and Marcus. The family relocated to South Bend, IN, where they visited several churches before being led by God to become members of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.
Pastor Barry C. Spencer comes to us from Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church where his Pastor is Rev. Larry Davidson. Pastor Spencer spent 19 years at Greater Friendship. While at Greater Friendship Minister Spencer served as assistant to the Pastor, served on the deacon board, taught various classes; i.e. Young Adults, Sunday school and teacher’s meeting. In addition he drove the church’s van and chaired the Pastor’s Aide ministry.
He became a licensed minister in 2009, preaching and teaching God’s word, teaching Wednesday night and noon day Bible study, evangelizing and performing funerals.
During his stay at Greater Friendship he attended Bethel College (2009-2014) and received an Associate Degree in Bible Ministry, BS in Organizational Management, a BA in Bible and Ministry and an MBA in Business Administration. While attending Bethel he made the dean’s list 5 out 6 semesters, was awarded the Academic Excellence Scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude in Bible Ministry and Organizational Management.
In March of 2015, Pastor Spencer entered into full time Pastorship and graciously accepted the call to serve as Pastor of Progressive Missionary Baptist church. Succeeding, Pastor Dante A. Newbill, Sr., who served the congregation for six years.
Pastor Spencer currently works full time, serves as head sprint coach at John Adams High School, and does counseling during the week. He is currently working on his Masters of Counseling with a concentration in Mental Health and substance abuse. He is also the Co-founder of South Bend Blazers Track Club. Progressive Church family is blessed to have this man of God. He loves God’s people and all the little children.
